What Is Family Mediation and Who Is It For?
Family mediation is a voluntary process that helps couples and families resolve disagreements, navigate transitions, and work toward mutually acceptable agreements with the assistance of a neutral third party. A Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator does not take sides, make decisions, or provide legal advice. Instead, the mediator facilitates productive discussions and helps participants explore options and work toward practical resolutions.
Family mediation may be appropriate for:

  • Married or Unmarried Couples

  • Divorcing or Separating Couples

  • Parents & Co-Parents

  • Blended Families

  • Military Families

  • LGBTQ+ Couples & Families

  • Couples and Families Experiencing Significant Life Changes

What Types of Issues Can Be Addressed in Family Mediation?
Family mediation may help with:

  • Divorce & Separation

  • Parenting Plans & Time-Sharing

  • Child & Spousal Support Discussions

  • Division of Assets & Debts

  • Retirement & Financial Considerations

  • Relocation Matters

  • Co-Parenting Concerns

  • Post-Judgment Modifications

  • Pet Agreements

How Does Virtual Family Mediation Work?
Virtual mediation takes place through a secure online video platform that can be accessed from a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Participants may join from:

  • Home

  • Separate Locations

  • Different Cities or States

All you need is:

  • A Computer, Tablet, or Smartphone

  • Reliable Internet Access

  • A Quiet, Private Location

Do We Need to Be in the Same Location?
No. Participants may attend from separate homes, offices, states, or even different countries. Virtual family mediation is especially beneficial for military families, relocated parents, and long-distance co-parenting situations.

Can We Participate If One or Both of Us Live Outside Florida?

Yes. As long as the matter is appropriate for Florida family mediation, participants may attend virtually from almost anywhere. Many clients participate while traveling, living temporarily out of state, serving in the military, or residing in different locations.

What If We Don't Want to Be in the Same Virtual Room?
Private breakout rooms are available when needed. The mediator can meet privately with each participant and move between rooms throughout the session to help reduce tension, improve communication, and create a more comfortable environment for productive discussions.

Do We Need Attorneys?
No. You may participate in family mediation with or without an attorney. If you already have legal counsel, attorneys may participate directly or review agreements before they are finalized. You may also consult with an attorney at any point during the mediation process.

Can a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator Give Legal Advice?
No. Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediators are prohibited from providing legal advice, representing either party, or determining who is right or wrong. Participants are encouraged to seek independent legal advice whenever needed. Source: Florida Rules for Certified and Court-Appointed Mediators.

What If the Other Person Is Difficult or Unwilling to Compromise?
This is one of the most common concerns. Family mediators are trained to manage difficult conversations, improve communication, and help participants focus on solutions rather than conflict. While no mediator can force an agreement, many couples and families make meaningful progress even when they begin far apart.

What If There Has Been Significant Conflict Between Us?
Every situation is unique. Before mediation begins, we discuss any concerns regarding communication, safety, or other factors that may impact the process. Separate breakout rooms and structured communication techniques can often help create a more productive environment.

How Long Does Family Mediation Take?
Every couple and family is different. Some matters are resolved in a single session, while others require additional sessions. Latitude Mediation reserves a minimum of three hours for each mediation session to allow sufficient time for meaningful discussion and progress.

What Happens When We Reach an Agreement?

If agreements are reached, Latitude Mediation will prepare a written summary of the agreed-upon terms. Depending on your circumstances, those agreements may later be incorporated into parenting plans, settlement agreements, court filings, or other legal documents.

What Happens If We Don't Reach Agreement on Everything?
Partial agreements are common and often valuable. Even when every issue is not resolved, mediation frequently narrows disagreements, identifies common ground, and helps reduce future time, stress, and legal expenses.

Is Family Mediation Less Expensive Than Going To Court?
In most cases, yes. Family mediation is often significantly less expensive and less time-consuming than litigation while allowing participants to remain actively involved in the decisions that affect their family.

What Are the Benefits of Family Mediation?
Family mediation is often:

  • More Affordable Than Litigation

  • Faster Than the Court Process

  • More Private & Less Stressful

  • Flexible & Convenient

  • Focused On Communication & Problem-Solving

  • Designed To Keep Decision-Making with YOU Rather Than a Judge

Is Family Mediation Confidential?
Florida law provides strong confidentiality protections for mediation communications through the Florida Mediation Confidentiality and Privilege Act. Statements made during mediation generally cannot be disclosed or used later in court, subject to limited exceptions established by law. Is Family Mediation Effective?
Yes. National studies commonly report that approximately 70%–90% of mediation cases result in full or partial agreement. Florida mediation providers have reported particularly strong outcomes when couples and families participate voluntarily before litigation progresses. The earlier parties engage in mediation, the greater the opportunity to reach mutually acceptable resolutions and avoid prolonged court involvement. Who Is a Good Candidate for Family Mediation?
Family mediation may be a good option for couples and families who:

  • Want To Avoid Unnecessary Conflict & Expense

  • Want More Control Over Decisions Affecting Their Family

  • Are Willing to Participate in Good Faith

  • Prefer A Private & Confidential Process

  • Are Interested in Exploring Mutually Acceptable Solutions

You do not need to agree on everything - or anything - to begin mediation.

Can Family Mediation Help Military Families?
Yes. Virtual family mediation is particularly beneficial for military families navigating deployments, PCS moves, long-distance parenting, schedule changes, and other family transitions.

Do You Work With LGBTQ+ Couples and Families?
Absolutely. Latitude Mediation welcomes and supports ALL couples and families and provides a respectful, inclusive, and neutral environment for every participant.
